Pajštún Castle is a ruin located above the village of Borinka and is one of the most well-known castles in the Little Carpathians, enjoying considerable popularity. Bratislava residents often make weekend trips here.

Pajštún Castle

The hike to the castle ruins is relatively short, but with steeper terrain, offering scenic views and opportunities to explore history. Borinka, where the ascent begins, is easily accessible by car or public transport. Although the hike from Borinka is not long, the climb can be physically challenging. In addition to hikers, Pajštún is popular among climbers and, in recent years, mountain bikers.

The most practical way to reach Pajštún Castle from Borinka is by car, though parking can be limited. Most visitors park near the village church. Alternatives include bus transport or a longer walk from Záhorská Bystrica District, accessible by public transport, which makes for a full-day excursion.

The castle can be reached via the red-marked trail from Borinka, typically taking 30 to 45 minutes. The ascent itself is mostly through the forest and not particularly striking. The highlight is the castle cliff, a steep limestone formation that has long been a training ground for local climbers.

You can continue up to the ruins themselves, exploring the collapsed walls and battlements. From these points, you get beautiful views over the surrounding forests of the Little Carpathians. Caution is advised, as the ruins are not well-maintained.

The trip to Pajštún can also be enjoyed as a short day outing with a picnic or barbecue. Below the castle, above Borinka, there is a meadow with a campfire area. Mountain bikers often visit the nearby Maják Trail, which passes directly by the castle walls. This is a challenging downhill route suitable only for experienced riders.

While the hike to Pajštún Castle is relatively short, it is moderately demanding. The second half of the ascent is quite steep, making the descent somewhat tricky. Hiking poles are recommended. Otherwise, the trail is suitable for families with children and active seniors.
