Today, Gábor Baross Park serves as a simple urban space for Bratislava residents to relax, walk their dogs, or enjoy easy strolls. The park is named after Gábor Baross, the Minister of Transport during the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, who initiated the construction of the nearby Old Bridge.
The park is bordered by Šafárik Square, Štúrova, Gajová, and Alžbetínska streets. Nearby is an important traffic junction, whose noise has been partially reduced by limiting car traffic along Štúrova Street.
Gábor Baross Park is conveniently located near a tram stop, giving easy access to the rest of the city. Noise in the area has also been reduced by removing bus stops and taxi stands. The park, with its spacious lawn, greenery, the interesting Poézia (Marína) Fountain, and benches, naturally enhances the public space in the city center and provides a pleasant spot to relax.
The best way to reach Gábor Baross Park is by tram, which runs directly from Petržalka. A pleasant bike path runs along the edge of the park. Many people also visit on foot. Although it is still possible to drive, parking in the area is paid, and going by car is no longer recommended.
Historically, the park’s land was the site of Landerer Palace, owned by the printer Ján Michal Landerer. Later, it became the location of important military barracks. The palace burned down during bombing at the end of World War II and was eventually demolished, creating a larger open space.
Over time, the park fell into decline, with noisy tram termini, smoky Ikarus buses, and taxi stands along its edge. During the socialist era, a prominent yellow kiosk selling hot dogs became a familiar feature, later joined by a similar kiosk selling “Richman” (a cult fast food: a baguette filled with meat, cheese, and vegetables to order).
The park has since undergone a successful revitalization, making it much more pleasant. Today, Gábor Baross Park is known for its well-maintained greenery, flower beds, and a row of tall trees.
At the center of the park stands the Marína (Poézia) Fountain, created by Tibor Bartfay. Above its rectangular basin is a bronze statue of a girl, a mushroom-shaped structure, and several water jets. The fountain refreshes and enhances the overall atmosphere of the park.
Gravel-covered paths and benches also improve the park’s appeal. Dog owners enjoy a dedicated fenced area, while families benefit from a small playground in one corner of the park.
Nearby, you can visit the Old Bridge, which, after reconstruction, provides a nice space for walks toward Petržalka and offers beautiful sunset views. Popular attractions near the park also include the unique historical landmark of the Blue Church. Other notable buildings near Gábor Baross Park include the Comenius University Campus, housing the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Arts.
