Bratislava Castle, often called the “upturned chair” is one of the historic landmarks of Bratislava. It perfectly combines a scenic destination for a walk with great views over the city and surroundings, as well as opportunities to explore history. Although the castle is situated above the city, it is easily accessible by car or public transport.

Once you arrive, in addition to the views, you can enjoy pleasant walks along the paths directly below the castle or stop by one of the nearby restaurants. The Baroque Garden is also worth a visit, and during the summer season, you can relax in the small park by the children’s playground.

Several walking routes lead to Bratislava Castle directly from the city center, such as the climb via the Castle Stairs or the Strmá Street, which has a somewhat mysterious, dark alley feel. There are also multiple other paths. Public transport stops are nearby, and parking is available, for example, in the underground garage on Palisády Street, near the Vienna Gate.

Parking is also possible in adjacent residential areas. If you’re fit, you can reach the castle by weaving through the streets on foot or by bike. Keep in mind that the castle grounds close later in the evening, after which you can only walk along the outer walls—but even from there, the city views are impressive.

Bratislava Castle is a great destination for visitors of all ages. There is something for everyone: panoramic views of much of Bratislava, especially the Old Town, the Danube, and neighboring Austria. You can visit the children’s playground, dine at a restaurant, or explore the castle’s interior and exhibitions. Nearby, the Slovak Parliament also offers viewing platforms with excellent western-facing vistas.
