The Slate Mine in Marianka is a historic mining site located in Mariánske Valley, directly opposite the local Calvary. The mine has been made interestingly accessible to the public and is well worth a visit. It is only open sporadically, usually on public holidays.
This tiny mining exhibition, featuring photographs and practical demonstrations of slate extraction and processing, is the smallest mining exhibition in Slovakia, covering just 14 m². In addition to the many fascinating insights you gain during a guided tour, the site is very easily accessible. The visit is recommended for all types of visitors.
The Slate Mine is located very close to Bratislava, making it an excellent destination for a short trip. Marianka can be reached quickly from the city by car or public transport, bringing you right to the mine. The mine itself is situated in Mariánske Valley, a popular pilgrimage site.
The entrance to the Slate Mine is on the hillside opposite the Calvary, right next to the asphalt path running through the valley, making it easy to spot. The entrance portal has been restored and is clearly visible.
Tours are generally organized on public holidays, but it is advisable to check exact times online. A guided tour of the mine is more engaging than one might expect from such a small site. It is one of the oldest and most significant mining works in Slovakia.
During the tour, you will learn that slate was widely used for construction, especially for roofing tiles and school writing tablets. Marianka slate was even exported abroad for these purposes. Visitors can also try shaping a piece of slate themselves – for example, cutting out a small slate heart.
