Písaný kameň is one of the historical boundary stones marking the territory of Bratislava. Specifically, it marked the northern border of the city, which neighbored the Stupava-Pajštún estate.

Písaný kameň Boundary Stone

Today, the stone is partially collapsed but still represents an interesting destination for a walk. Few people are aware of it, even though it is part of a much longer historical boundary line that stretches through the Little Carpathians north of the city.

No official tourist trail leads directly to Písaný kameň, but it is easily accessible from Kačín Leisure Area via a combination of the red tourist trail and forest paths toward Marianka Village. From Kačín, the stone can be reached on foot in about half an hour, and the route is also suitable for a mountain bike.

At the location marked as Za Kačínom on the trail, you need to leave the red trail to the right onto a forest path. From there, it is only about a five-minute walk to the stone.

If possible, bring a GPS device to locate the stone easily. Transport to Kačín is important to plan, as public transport is infrequent and cars are not allowed in the area. Public transport to Kačín is available from Patrónka Street. Walking from the city to Kačín significantly extends the hike but allows for an interesting route through various parts of Bratislava. If cycling, expect a few steeper climbs along the way.

Písaný kameň is hidden in the forest. Nearby, along the path from Kačín, you can also notice smaller boundary stones that formed the historical city line. Close to the stone, in a pronounced forest valley, there is a fire pit and a spring, although the spring appeared dry at the time. Be sure to bring water with you.

The hike from Kačín is easy and suitable for dogs. It can also be completed by seniors, children, or even with a stroller or a child carrier. However, if you plan to walk from Železná Studnička Recreation Area, expect roughly a 1,5-hour uphill trek.
