The World War I Memorial is located on Murmanská Hill (Murmanská Výšina), near Slavín Memorial. It was built in 1927 by architect Franz Wimmer and sculptor Alois Rigele. While its main purpose is commemorative, the memorial also makes a nice destination for a short trip.
Architecturally, it is interesting in its own right. The monument is unique, built from large stone blocks with massive lion heads protruding from them, which will surely catch the attention of children as well.
The area around the memorial is bordered by Ulica francúzskych partizánov (Street of French Partisans) and Na Baránku Street. Nearby stands another military memorial, Slavín. Compared to Slavín, the Murmanská Hill memorial is much more hidden.
Although in the past this spot likely offered one of the best views of Bratislava and even had a lookout tower, it is now surrounded by bushes and trees, making it easy to miss. You can identify it by the stone stairways leading up from French Partisans Street.
The best way to reach it is on foot, though public transport can get you relatively close. The terrain is mildly hilly, so walking here from the city center may be challenging for some. Cycling uphill is an option for those comfortable on a bike. Driving is possible, but don’t expect a proper parking lot – you’ll likely need to park somewhere nearby.
The memorial itself is a large stone cube made from substantial granite blocks. Interestingly, the material comes from the dismantled base of the famous Maria Theresa monument that once stood at Ľudovít Štúr Square.
Besides its austere, massive design, the memorial is distinguished by four massive lion heads at its base. Narrow blocks protrude on each side for attaching wreaths. The surrounding area is rather plain and at times slightly neglected, although people do come here to light candles. The armed forces sometimes organize commemorative ceremonies here, emphasizing the futility of war.
A short trip to this memorial is suitable for almost anyone who can handle a short uphill walk. If mobility is limited, take public transport or drive as close as possible. This outing is ideal for families with children, dog walkers, or even runners you might encounter along the way.
Nearby, you can also visit Slavín Memorial with its beautiful views, or the popular Horský Park with its ranger station and refreshments, making it easy to combine multiple stops in one trip.
