Stará Tržnica is a vibrant space where traditional market activities meet cultural functions and practical services, such as gastronomy. For Bratislava residents, it offers an excellent spot for meeting, shopping, and enjoying cultural experiences right in the city center.

Old Market Hall – Bratislava

The building was established in 1910 on the site of the city’s fortifications, specifically a 15th-century tower. Today, it has developed a unique and distinctive atmosphere. Stará Tržnica is located near Námestie Nežnej Revolúcie (Velvet Revolution Square) and Námestie SNP (Slovak National Uprising Square) and is generally easy to access.

The market hall is bordered by Klobučnická, Nedbalova, and Laurinská streets. The best way to get there is by tram, with a stop directly across from the building. Car access is also possible, but parking nearby is quite limited. A better option is to arrive by bicycle or on foot.

The building itself is a beautiful historical structure. It has been successfully renovated, highlighting both its facade and its interesting interior spaces. This early 20th-century building comes to life thanks to the bustle of regular markets held inside. The structure was designed by city engineer Gyula Laubner, specifically by the architectural team of Laubner, Dobisz, and Nechyba.

The unique atmosphere of Stará Tržnica appeals to almost everyone. Visitors can find something for themselves, although the main focus remains the sale of market goods. Markets are regularly held on Saturdays throughout the day, featuring vendors offering meat, fruits, vegetables, baked goods, cheeses, coffee, and more.

Inside the hall, you can enjoy a glass of wine, while outside or in the market area, you can sample beer or various other gastronomic delights. Together, it creates the feel of a charming urban market suitable for families with children, seniors, or anyone looking for a relaxed meeting spot. Velvet Revolution Square in front of the hall is often bustling with visitors enjoying the surrounding establishments.

If you visit Stará Tržnica, be sure to notice the 11th-century Chapel of St. James and the Lion Fountain with its coat of arms, both located directly on Námestie Nežnej Revolúcie in front of the market hall.
