Main Square is located in the historic center of Bratislava’s Old Town and forms the very heart of the city. It is one of the most attractive and visited areas in Bratislava, drawing tourists from all over.

Main Square

This public space captivates visitors not only with its historic buildings and foreign embassies but also with cafes and other places to sit and relax. In addition, cultural events and seasonal markets, such as the popular Christmas market, are regularly held here, making it a destination for visitors of all ages and interests.

Access to Main Square is primarily on foot, as vehicle entry is limited in this part of the city. Bicycles are also a good option, and there are nearby public transport stops, with trams being particularly convenient. The square is easily reachable from all directions, though one should be prepared for crowds of tourists, which are common.

Main Square is historically and visually appealing. It features historic city houses, embassy buildings, and smaller curiosities, such as the statue of a Napoleonic soldier or the portrait of an unjust citizen on the Old Town Hall, which legend claims was carried by the devil himself.

Historically, the square was formed by dividing a larger central market area through surrounding buildings. Records from the 14th century show the square’s name as Forum (Market), but over time it has been known as Franz Joseph Platz, Masaryk Square, and even Hitler Square, with the German name Hauptplatz appearing in documents from the late 18th century.

From these facts, it is clear that Main Square once functioned as a marketplace, trade hub, celebration site for coronations, and even a notorious execution ground. Today, it is particularly lively during Christmas, when the festive markets and Christmas tree attract large crowds.

Visiting Main Square is suitable for almost anyone, except perhaps those seeking more secluded spots, as tourist crowds can be overwhelming. Highlights include climbing the tower of the Old Town Hall for a panoramic view of the square.

Nearby attractions include the Michael's Gate, which offers beautiful views of the Old Town and only a short walk away is located Bratislava Castle, with stunning views of the square and surroundings, including the parliament building. For a more relaxed visit, the square also offers numerous cafes and restaurants where visitors can enjoy the atmosphere.
