Franciscan Square is a public space located in the historic center of Bratislava. Together with the nearby Main Square, it is one of the most significant locations in the Old Town. Among the most notable structures on the square are the Franciscan Church with its monastery and the fountain known as the Woman with a Jug, or František’s Nymph. Additionally, visitors will notice the Marian Column. The square is popular with tourists, thanks in part to its excellent accessibility.

Franciscan Square

Vehicle access to Franciscan Square is restricted, so the best way to reach it is on foot or by using the nearby public transport network, especially trams. Bicycles can also be used to access the area.
Franciscan Squareis relatively small compared to the adjacent Main Square and Primate’s Square. It is paved and features planted trees, yet despite its modest size, there is much to admire. The square is dominated by historical buildings such as the Franciscan Church, the monastery, and several other centuries-old structures.

A great view of the square can be enjoyed from the Old Town Hall Tower, which also provides a clear perspective of the Woman with a Jug Fountain, originally a well, as well as the Marian Column, erected by Emperor and King of Hungary Leopold I as a symbol of the suppression of a Protestant uprising.

Another key religious landmark on the square is the Church of the Most Holy Savior, commonly called the Jesuit Church. The area also features several cafes and eateries where visitors can relax. In autumn, the square hosts Christmas market stalls, adding seasonal charm.
Franciscan Square is worth visiting as part of a walk through the historic center. It is suitable for families with children, seniors, and anyone interested in the history of Bratislava. Nearby, visitors can also explore views from Michael’s Tower or, during the Christmas season, enjoy the tree at Main Square.
