The missile base on the summit of Devínska Kobyla is a decommissioned element of Bratislava’s air defense system from the times of the Iron Curtain and the Cold War. During the socialist era, access to this area was forbidden, but today the base is abandoned and freely accessible to the public.

Rocket Base Devínska Kobyla

This presents an intriguing temptation to explore the history of a once-restricted site, but it also carries inherent dangers due to the dilapidated and unmaintained structures. The base can be reached via an asphalt road or the red hiking trail. Besides the abandoned missile silos – around which legends circulate that they once stored nuclear weapons – visitors are also drawn to the increasingly popular observation tower at the very top of Bratislava’s highest hill.

The missile base, located on the border of two formerly opposing blocs, is most quickly accessed by a combination of driving from Dúbravka District and a roughly half-hour walk along the asphalt road or through the forest via the red hiking trail. It is also possible to reach it entirely on foot from Dlhé Diely, Devín, Devínska Nová Ves, or Dúbravka.

Cycling enthusiasts can reach the base via road or mountain bike, depending on the chosen route. Both hiking and biking routes from the lower slopes are fairly demanding. Parking is available in front of the barrier on the asphalt road at the location marked on maps as Dúbravská Hlavica.

The base itself is quite expansive. It is fenced with a concrete wall, but entry through the main gate is straightforward. The entire complex is hidden beneath tree canopies. There are numerous abandoned buildings, among which the former missile silos are the most interesting.

All structures are significantly damaged, as is the rest of the site, which contains numerous hazards such as pits and uneven terrain. Visitors should exercise caution when exploring.

With the construction of the observation tower on the summit of Devínska Kobyla, it is possible that the entire missile base area will eventually be renovated and made more accessible, transforming it into an attractive site highlighting the military history of Bratislava.
