The Dunajské Luhy Protected Landscape Area is a magical network of wetlands, islands, and peninsulas, covered with lush floodplain forests and interwoven with branches of the Danube River. It stretches southeast from Bratislava along the course of the Danube.
Although relatively unknown, this part of Slovakia’s nature is truly remarkable and well worth exploring. Its low profile means it remains peaceful and largely free from crowds.
The protected area is divided into five subregions and covers nearly 123 km². Exploring it is not necessarily for everyone – on foot or by bicycle is possible, but some parts may require wading through shallow water, which can be challenging for some but adds a sense of adventure.
Dunajské Luhy is easily reachable by car from Bratislava. For those with endurance, it is also accessible via cycling paths along the embankments. A red hiking trail runs through the area, guiding visitors through its natural beauty.
Dunajské Luhy is a remnant of a much larger and unique European ecosystem, which existed before the construction of the Gabčíkovo Dam. The unregulated Danube once shaped a constantly changing landscape, reshaped by frequent floods and framed by the extensive Little Carpathian forests. Today, Dunajské Luhy offers a small sample of this dynamic environment, perfect for hours of wandering.
The area’s combination of river branches, wetlands, ponds, islands, and fords is truly unique. It also hosts rich fauna and flora, including beautiful waterfowl. Exploring the area is especially enjoyable by bicycle, ideally when the water levels in fords are moderate, temperatures are comfortable, and mosquitoes are not yet abundant.
Dunajské Luhy is ideal for nature lovers and adventurers who don’t require cafes or shelters along the way and can rely on their own supplies. Trails of varying lengths can be chosen depending on fitness level, and even a short hike offers plenty of memorable experiences.
Near the Dunajské Luhy, it is worth visiting the Gabčíkovo Dam locks, which provide a fascinating opportunity to observe their operation up close.
