Malý Dunaj (Little Danube) is one of the most important rivers in Bratislava. Its origin is unusual, as it does not have a natural spring. It branches off from the main Danube near the boatyard in Vlčie hrdlo and travels 128 kilometers before joining the Váh River near Kolárovo.

The separation of Malý Dunaj from the Danube created the largest river island in Europe – Žitný ostrov (Rye Island). The river is famous for its vast reserves of drinking water.
Malý Dunaj offers excellent conditions for relaxation. Its calm waters meander through a pleasant lowland landscape, forming oxbow arms in some areas. Nearby, visitors can enjoy beautiful floodplain forests and charming villages. This combination creates an ideal environment for easy, leisurely trips suitable for all types of visitors.
There are many ways to reach Malý Dunaj in Bratislava – on foot, by public transport, by car, or by bicycle. Cycling is one of the most attractive options, as there are good bike paths along the river. For residents of Vrakuňa District, the Little Danube is particularly accessible. Canoeing along its waters is also one of the most enjoyable experiences.
Malý Dunaj offers many picturesque spots that are easy to reach on land or during a paddle. Canoeing here is popular even with beginners. The surrounding area is great for easy cycling trips with children, jogging, or just a relaxing day in nature.
Within Bratislava, visitors can explore several highlights, such as the Old Weir, where Malý Dunaj branches from the main Danube, the Vrakuňa Lookout Tower and adjacent forest park, or sites like M.R. Štefánik Airport with the memorial of the Slovak statesman who tragically died there.
Other nearby attractions include the lakes Zelená voda and Korzo Zálesie (Zálesie Promenade), the Hniezdo Lookout, Totem Meadow, and historic water mills along the river, such as the one in Kolárovo. There is also Star-Shaped Fort Csillagvár near Dolné Janíky. Fishing is also possible in the area, in addition to exploring its natural and cultural sites.
