The Gabčíkovo Waterworks is the most important waterworks structure in the Bratislava region and one of the key water management facilities in Slovakia. Like many other dams, it also serves a significant recreational function, particularly for residents of Bratislava and the surrounding area. The waterworks is located about 50 km south of the capital on the Danube River near the village of Gabčíkovo.

The entire complex offers excellent opportunities for active relaxation, including kayaking, fishing, cycling, light hiking, riverside walks, birdwatching, and even art exploration, such as a visit to the Danubiana Museum of Modern Art. A unique feature is the possibility of visiting the navigation locks at Gabčíkovo, which can be toured even by boat. Among the most well-known parts of the waterworks is the Hrušov Reservoir.
Gabčíkovo Waterworks can be explored very well by bicycle. Cycling paths run along the perimeter embankments, providing access to various parts of the complex. Individual sections are also accessible by car, public transport, or on foot. Experienced boaters can explore its nooks by canoe or kayak, and sightseeing cruises are also available.
Besides its key economic functions—such as electricity generation, flood protection, and facilitating river navigation—the waterworks provides numerous recreational opportunities. From this perspective, it is one of the most significant leisure destinations near Bratislava.
Visitors can enjoy scenic Danube inlets, floodplain forests, and explore nearby small villages. Cycling is ideal for exploring the area, with asphalt bike paths suitable for road or hybrid bikes.
Daily post-work bike rides along the embankments are increasingly popular, with many refreshment points and traditional countryside inns called “čárda” or “cszarda” along the route. The paths attract runners and rollerbladers as well, with natural trails alongside the embankments offering alternatives to asphalt.
The surrounding floodplain forests offer a chance to observe unique flora and fauna. Birdwatchers, in particular, can enjoy observing wildlife from the Čunovo Birdwatching Tower. One of the most beautiful experiences is discovering the Dunajské Luhy Protected Landscape Area, a truly unique system of floodplain forests and Danube branches.
Water sports enthusiasts can visit the Divoká Voda Čunovo Water Sports Center. Other attractions include the Šamorín sports resort (X-bionic Sphere), with pools, playgrounds, accommodation, and dining. Popular cycling destinations include Kopáčsky Island, Starohájsky Island, Ovsištská Riviera, and many more spots – boredom is not an option.
The area is an ideal playground for people of all ages. Families can take even the youngest children in bike trailers. For those who enjoy nature walks, the floodplain forests offer easy, low-difficulty trails suitable for nearly everyone.
