The concrete bunker on Odborárska Street, in the area of the Dimitrovka Chemical Plant, is part of the German military fortifications of Bratislava from World War II. It was built in 1945 along one of the city’s defensive lines, which stretched from the Rössler Quarry through Tehelné pole and Štrkovec areas to the Danube River.
Despite its gigantic cubic shape and prominent location in a residential area, the bunker is relatively unknown to Bratislava locals. Today, it houses spaces for a restaurant, although in the past it served not only as a military structure but also as a civil defense shelter, due to the potential risks from the chemical plant, such as contamination or fire.
The bunker is easily accessible by car, bicycle, public transport, or on foot for nearby residents. Parking is available on standard residential parking areas. Its location right on a busy residential street highlights the bizarre juxtaposition of a massive military structure within a modern urban neighborhood.
Visiting the bunker is recommended for people interested in unusual historical sites, especially military history enthusiasts, but also for anyone looking for a short urban excursion in Bratislava.
The site is suitable for families with children as well as seniors. You could even incorporate it into a cycling route. After exploring the bunker, you can also make use of the services of the on-site restaurant, although we did not personally test it.
