Michael’s Gate (Michalská brána) is one of the four city gates of Bratislava that have survived to the present day. It consists of a prominent tower with a gate at its base, through which Michalská Street passes. It is also one of the main landmarks of Bratislava.

Michael's Gate

On the sidewalk passing through the gate, there is a milestone indicating the distances from Bratislava to major world capitals, along with the directions in which they are located. Michael’s Gate is very easily accessible, and the views from its tower over the historic center make it a popular destination for visitors.

The name of the gate originates from a settlement that existed on the outskirts of the city near the Church of St. Michael. In the past, the gate was equipped with large drawdoors and a portcullis. The tower was built in the 14th century and has been extended multiple times.

It is especially notable for its striking copper onion-shaped roof, crowned with a statue of St. Michael, created by the master sculptor Peter Eller. This appearance was given to the tower during a Baroque reconstruction in the mid-18th century.

This historic structure is located in the upper part of Michalská Street, surrounded by old buildings. It is conveniently accessible by tram, with the nearest stop at Kapucínska Street, followed by a short walk to the gate.

Visiting Michael’s Gate is an excellent destination for anyone interested in history, city views, or a pleasant walk. These elements are perfectly combined here. The tower has a total height of 51 meters.
