Pub, beer hall, or infamously called the “spittoon,” Ponorka (Submarine) is a long-standing establishment with an underground vibe in the center of Bratislava, right next to Comenius University.
It is a budget-friendly venue, but over the years its unique atmosphere has made it legendary, even iconic, in Bratislava’s pub scene. Much of this atmosphere has been shaped by its unusual clientele, consisting of diverse social groups – from failed academics, regular drifters, and intellectuals to knowledge-hungry students from various Bratislava universities.
Ponorka is located on Tobrucká Street, and you might not even notice it at first, because entering it really feels like boarding a submarine. The bar “deck” is in the basement, accessible via stairs from the street.
Inside, the classic interior that made the pub famous – along with its eclectic mix of patrons—has largely been renovated. However, many original features remain. Notable highlights included the unique restrooms, which, like the rest of the interior, have been significantly refurbished.
As for the beer, it is among the cheapest in Bratislava. Its combination of quality and low price has traditionally suited students and anyone looking for a budget-friendly drink. Seating is usually crowded and smoky, and inexpensive spirits were priced uniformly – likely for practical reasons, making it easy to total your tab. Snacks such as chips are available, keeping it a classic neighborhood pub in the heart of the city, memorable in its own right.
