Družba Fountain is truly a monumental work of art. It is the largest fountain in Slovakia. It serves as the central feature of Námestie Slobody Square (Freedom Square) in Bratislava, which itself has a rather grand, imposing presence. The fountain was created by sculptors Tibor Bártfay, Juraj Hovorka, and Karol Lacko, with architects Juraj Hlavica and Virgil Droppa.

Družba Fountain

For a long time, the fountain in the square was non-functional. It was only after 16 years that the city administration managed to restore it. Together with the revitalization of the square, this created a highly popular public space, especially appreciated for the chance to cool off directly in the fountain during hot summer days.

Družba Fountain is very easy to access. It is located in the city center, reachable by almost any means of transport, though driving is the least convenient option. Paid parking is available around Freedom Square.

The fountain dates back to the socialist era and was completed in 1980. Its design strongly reflects the period, characterized by typical socialist monumentalism in both appearance and scale. The main feature of the fountain is a metal sculpture of a linden flower, standing 9 meters tall and weighing an astonishing 12 tons. The flower is made of polished metal, and around it is a shallow, tiered circular pool with a diameter of 45 meters.

Water jets from the flower and several spherical spouts, cascading over the steps in sections of the pool in a visually striking display. The fountain requires 200 cubic meters of water to operate, though originally it used an extravagant 2,000 cubic meters. Beneath the flower lies a large machinery room, whose equipment requires careful maintenance. Neglect in past years caused the fountain to stop functioning in 1989, and it was finally restored in 2023.

Today, Freedom Square serves as a public relaxation space, particularly in the summer months. The fountain’s water provides a cooling effect, and the pool is accessible for visitors to splash in. It is especially popular among families with children. Access to the fountain is free, and while the water is safe for contact, it is not potable.

Nearby, on Freedom Square, there are places to enjoy a coffee or other refreshments. Visitors can relax on benches or spread out on the grassy areas, sometimes shaded by trees. In the vicinity of the fountain, you can also admire the Office of the Government of the Slovak Republic, and the Presidential Garden near the Presidential Palace offers further tranquil spots for rest and relaxation.
